The Kyoto University Faculty of Agriculture “Shimeikai” is an alumni association of the Faculty of Agriculture whose regular members are graduates of the Faculty of Agriculture and the Graduate School of Agriculture, Kyoto University. Former and current faculty members, students, and others qualify as special members. The Association aims to facilitate close contact and friendship among its members.
A secretariat was set up in the northern campus (former Experiment Forest Office). The Association engages in various projects, such as publishing the “Shimeikai Member Register,” organizing the “Baikonkai” as an opportunity for socialization among professors emeriti and current faculty members, and holding softball tournaments with the participation of students and faculty members.
In September 1924 (Taisho 13), shortly after the establishment of the Faculty of Agriculture, the Shimeikai was founded as an internal organization consisting of faculty, staff, students, and alumni of the Faculty of Agriculture. The name comes from Shimeigatake, one of the peaks of Mt. Hiei that is visible from the environment of the Faculty of Agriculture.
The Association initially focused on activities of athletics and other clubs, publishing a bulletin and a member register, but after many twists and turns, it was separated from the faculty in April 1971 (Showa 46) and came to function more as an alumni association.
