The mechanical engineering-related departments at Kyoto University can be traced back to the founding of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1897 (Meiji 30), which created the first department of Kyoto University alongside the Department of Civil Engineering. Celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2022 (Reiwa 4), it has developed into an education and research organization that integrates a wide range of fields, with staff at the Division of Mechanical Science and Engineering and the Division of Microengineering at the Graduate School of Engineering, the Division of Energy Conversion Science at the Graduate School of Energy Science, the Division of Systems Science at the Graduate School of Informatics, the Institute for Life and Medical Sciences, and the Institute for Integrated Radiation and Nuclear Science.
The Keikikai is an alumni association consisting of graduates, current and former faculty members, and current students of these mechanical engineering-related departments.
In addition to the headquarters, the Association has five branches (Kansai, Kanto, Chubu, Chugoku/Shikoku, and Kyushu) and a student association for current students (aka SMILE), conducting activities for building friendships and creating personal and information networks, training human resources, and contributing to society.
